Shark Updates

My generously talented friend Tracey has a post about the shark attack in Solana Beach which has two new and interesting pieces of information. The first is, the shark that attacked the 66-year old triathlete was in fact a Great White. Secondly, as somebody who lives in the area, she’s observed a possibility about how this could have happened.

  1. Thanks for the link, Cara. The other day, about 100 friends of the victim paddled out on surfboards to the area of the attack for a water memorial. I thought it was touching. His “land” memorial is Sat., I believe.

I found this comment on a local news thread about the attack. People were ranting, blaming global warming, etc, and another commenter came in with this:

This attack was clearly caused by George Bush. If he rallied the government to provide free food and possibly low interest loans to the sharks then they would not need to eat swimmers.
Couldn’t help it — I thought it was kinda funny.

  2. Ms. Aloha says:

The two areas near me that have occasional shark attacks are to no surprise in the same place where seals live and turtles feed. People need to stop dressing like seals and turtles when they are swimming.

  3. Ms. Aloha — Hahahahahaha! Yes. And let’s work on that Free Food for Sharks program.

Another new tidbit on the attack: They found teeth left behind in the victim that confirm it was a great white, 15-16 ft. The victim was swimming in water that was only 20 – 30 feet deep. So so creepy.

  4. caraellison says:

    Oh my GAWD. TEETH?!

That’s amazing. Tracey you are the best ‘shark correspondent’ I could have ever asked for! I love these details!

  5. Ms. Aloha says:

Ok, this is going to sound gross. But that’s just the kind of mood I am in right now.. If they found the teeth in the victim, wouldn’t they now be the property of the family? Perhaps they could make a little necklace or something… ok, you can throw stuff at me now.

  6. caraellison says:

    Ms. A,

I like the way your mind works. Seriously.

I have a shark tooth necklace. My friend John Hawkins at Right Wing News sent it to me. I like it a lot.

  7. Just surfed in through Technorati. Have you heard anything about that SD surfer whose body was recovered up in Ventura County yesterday? I’m curious if it’s another shark attack but so far the coroner hasn’t said anything…

  8. I think the teeth come out while they’re attacking or something? Then they just grow new ones.

Which is nice for the shark.
